Melbourne is Australia’s largest city in the south, with an area of about 10,000 square kilometres, with population of over 5.3 million (equal to Sydney’s population, rival city of the east) and 31 local councils. Grew in fame and status during the Gold Rush days of the 1800s, once of the largest and richest cities during that time. Home to some of Australia’s best universities, includes Monash, Royal Melbourne Institute, La Trobe etc.

The city occupies much of the coastline of Port Phillip bay and spreads into Hinterland towards Dandenong and Macedon Ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. At the city’s center is the modern Federation Square development, with plazas, bars, and restaurants by the Yarra River. In the Southbank area, the Melbourne Arts Precinct is the site of Arts Centre Melbourne a performing arts complex and the National Gallery of Victoria, with Australian and indigenous art.
